The Reggae Dollar was born as a flyer designed to encourage people to pledge financial support to my walk from Cape Town to Cairo. In November of 2005, I had RSI (repetitive strain injury) from playing guitar on the streets of London. Unable to pay rent, but already having invested money in the flyer, I realised that instead of asking people to pledge support via an email, I could ask them for the 1 Pound per flyer immediately upon exchange. It worked. With the money I got from the flyer, I had it redesigned by a graphic designer from Ghana living in with a business in Hoxton, Justin Otoo. He designed a banknote with African motifs and a pound sign. In 2006 I had a new design made in Barcelona by Sandra Weeese of Stylofoam. This time it looked like an American dollar. It was popular and people were happy to purchase one in support of anything I said it was for. Now it stands for our survival and dignity as a planet.
